The writing

Real feedback on the writing — in minutes, not days.

Multiple choice is easy to check. Writing is where marks slip — and where parents are left guessing. Below is an actual marked response from Examinate: a Year 6 narrative, marked in under a minute.

Sample: Year 6 narrative · “Alone in an unexpected place” · 155 words · 12/20

Coaching in the margins

Feedback anchored to your child’s own sentences: what worked, and what to try instead.
Prompt

Write a narrative in which a character finds themselves alone in an unexpected place. Build tension through what your character notices, thinks, and does.

Your response155 words
It was strange because no one else was there even though the door was open. I picked up a book and started reading it. After a while I heard a noise behind me and I turned around but no one was there. I kept reading and tried to ignore it. It was a shadow but when I looked again it was gone. I so I put the book down and walked to the door. But the door was closed and I could not open it. I started to bang on the door but no one came. Just then the lights came back on and I saw a librarian standing there with the key.

Marked against the real criteria

Band-by-band scores with strengths, fixes, and evidence quoted from their writing.

Character development

2/4Developing

Your character reacts but we don't get inside her head. Add a thought, a memory, or a decision so the reader sees who she is.

Strengths
  • Character has consistent reactions
  • Uses dialogue to resolve the scene
Areas to improve
  • Show one inner thought from the character at the moment of fear.
From your writing
“I started to feel scared so I put the book down and walked to the door.”

A clear next step

Three concrete things to do differently next time, plus a sample response at the next band up.
  1. 1Drop us into the character's thinking — what does she expect, fear, or hope at each moment?
  2. 2Slow the build-up: spend a paragraph on a single sensory detail (a sound, a smell, a feeling) before resolving.
  3. 3Use specific verbs and sensory imagery instead of "started to" and "felt".

Every writing piece gets the full treatment: inline annotations · four criteria · strengths and fixes with quotes · next steps · a next-band sample response.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Every practice test reveals a weakness map — accuracy by topic, sub-skill, and question type. The next test we recommend targets the specific gaps that test exposed. Over time you see exactly what is improving and what still needs work, in plain language.
Every writing piece is graded against the same criteria the real test uses — argument quality, language, structure, spelling and grammar. You get a band for each criterion, specific suggestions on what to change, and a sample response at the next band so your child has a clear target. Most pieces come back in under two minutes.
You can cancel from your account in two clicks. No 12-week contracts, no calls, no held subscriptions. If you cancel mid-month you keep access until the period ends.
We provide practice tests tailored to NSW (Cambridge/Janison), VIC (ACER HAST), QLD (Edutest / ACER), NAPLAN (Years 3, 5, 7, 9) & Scholarship (Edutest / ACER). Each test format is structured to match the timing, structure, and question types your child will face.
There isn't one, and we'd rather be straight about why we offer it. The free test is a full test, marked the same way as any paid one — same AI feedback on the writing, same weakness map. We give it away because it's the only honest way to show you the questions are any good before you pay. If the diagnostic says your child is tracking fine, that's a useful answer and you don't need a plan. Plenty of families take the test and leave, and that's a fair outcome.
A coaching college runs roughly $800 a term for a single subject, and $4,000 to $8,000 a year for a full program. Examinate is $29 a month, or $169 a year. It is not a replacement for a good tutor — it is the thing that tells you and your tutor what to spend the time on. If it does not show you something useful in the first 30 days, email us and we will refund you.
A tutor can be excellent — but you only see what they cover, not what your child has missed. Examinate gives you a weekly picture of your child's strengths and gaps, marks the writing in minutes, and works alongside any tutor or coaching college. Many families use both.
All content is created by a qualified Australian teacher, informed by publicly available government test specifications. We don't reproduce or analyse copyrighted test provider materials. Every question is original.
Each child needs their own account so we can track their individual progress and tailor practice to their specific gaps.
NSW selective entry targets Year 6 students entering Year 7. The test follows the Cambridge/Janison format and covers reading, mathematical reasoning, thinking skills, and writing.
Victorian Selective Entry tests Year 8 students for Year 9 placement at one of the four selective schools. The test uses the ACER HAST format and covers reading, mathematics, written expression, and quantitative/abstract reasoning.
Queensland covers two main pathways: Queensland Academies for Year 7 (Edutest format) and Brisbane State High for Year 9 (ACER HAST format). Each has its own test structure and timing.
We provide preparation for NAPLAN at Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 across reading, writing, conventions of language, and numeracy.
Most independent and grammar schools run scholarship tests via Edutest or ACER. Format and timing vary by school, but the question styles overlap heavily with selective entry tests.
